This important Thomas Edison letter, dated March 15, 1877, was written to William Orton, president of Western Union Electric. The telegram reads in full: *"William Orton, can I have the contract to carry home with me. Brown has seen the machine and says he approves. Edison."* While brief, this note is believed to reference his two-plate embossing recorder/repeater, which he demonstrated at Western Union headquarters on March 14, 1877.
Within a week of this letter, on March 22, 1877, William Orton, deeply impressed by Edison's groundbreaking experiments and pending patents in telegraphy and telephony, signed a monumental agreement securing all of Edison's future telegraph and telephone patents in exchange for financial backing of his scientific work. This year is widely regarded as one of Edison's most significant, marked by his invention of the phonograph.
