The Most Feared Linebacker in NFL History

Selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the second round of the 1974 NFL Draft out of Kent State, Jack Lambert immediately transformed one of the greatest defenses ever assembled. As the starting middle linebacker from day one, Lambert anchored a unit that would carry Pittsburgh to four Super Bowl championships in six seasons (Super Bowls IX, X, XIII, and XIV). His toothless snarl and relentless intensity became the defining image of 1970s Steelers football.Lambert was named the 1976 NFL Defensive Player of the Year after recording a career-best season that cemented his reputation as the most dominant linebacker in football. Over his 11-year career (1974-1984), all spent with Pittsburgh, he earned nine consecutive Pro Bowl selections (1976-1984), was named First-Team All-Pro six times, and won the 1974 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award. He recorded 28 career interceptions — a remarkable total for a middle linebacker — and was the emotional and tactical leader of every defense he commanded.

Lambert was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1990, his first year of eligibility. The Steelers retired his iconic #58 jersey, and he was named to the NFL's 75th Anniversary All-Time Team. His combination of speed, intelligence, and ferocity set the standard for the modern middle linebacker position. Lambert's playing style was so intense that opposing quarterbacks and running backs regularly cited him as the most intimidating defender they ever faced.
